A comparison and contrasting of the capabilities and limitations of Helicopters and Tanks applied to the Joint Vision 2010 tenet of Dominant Maneuver and its applicability to the operational commander. Helicopters and tanks bring their own capabilities, limitations, and vulnerabilities to the battlefield and provide the operational commander with unique options for tailoring force to task. According to Joint Vision 2010, our goal is to produce a broader range of potential weapons effects by integrating advances in target effects technology into existing weapons. Additionally, the trend will be towards empowering individual warfighters with an array of technologies designed to magnify their power, improve their deployability and tactical mobility. Even though the desired effects of joint operations and increased speed and tempo is rapid massing of effects at the decisive place and time, it will not obviate the need for 'boots on the ground' in many operations. Dominant maneuver strives to achieve a more agile, faster moving, battlefield tempo. Current and future helicopter capabilities make it uniquely qualified to capitalize on the JV 2010 tenets. Emerging antitank technologies are increasing the vulnerability of tanks on the battlefield and reducing their utility for the operational commander.
