Results of this study indicate that it is in principle possible to design and construct an adjustable-height powered wheelchair which can be substituted for the front seat of a standard American two-door sedan. It is also possible to design and construct a single-control (one switch) lift which will place wheelchair and occupant in driving or passenger position. Most of the rear seat and the right-hand front seat areas would remain intact for the use of ordinary passengers. The adjustable-height wheelchair would allow the performance of daily activities at least as well as any standard powered wheelchair. Additionally the following operations are possible with the wheelchair: climbing or descending a 12-inch curb; elevating the seat to a position 8 inches above normal seat height; reclining of the back rest to 10 degrees above horizontal; and tipping the whole chair back 40 degrees.
