The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission conducted a national study of bicycle use and hazard patterns. Each year, bicycles are involved in about one million medically-attended injuries and almost 1,000 deaths. The estimated costs of these bicycle-related farms is approximately $8 billion annually. The CPSC study was based on the results of two nationwide surveys, a survey of injured bicyclists and a survey of the general population of bicyclists. Data from these surveys were used to conduct a formal risk analysis to determine and quantify the factors associated with risk. The CPSC study also included an engineering analysis of possible bicycle mechanical hazards reported from the injury survey, a human factors assessment of the children's injuries, a detailed analysis of bicycle helmet usage patterns, and an analysis of bicyclist deaths and fatality risk patterns. The study found that there are about 67 million bicyclists in the U.S. About 18 percent of these bicyclists wear helmets. The study also found that most injured bicyclists were children; about 37 percent of the injured bicyclists were under age 10, and about 71 percent were under age 15. About 10 percent of the injuries involved collisions with motor vehicles, and about one-third of deaths occurred after dark.
