Daimler-Benz is using for the first time, a five-cylinder in-line engine in a passenger vehicle as standard. The OM 617 diesel engine has a cubic capacity of 3 liters and an output of 59 kW (80 PS). This produces significant design and production advantages. The paper examines the dynamic behavior of this design.
