The report presents the results of a study of rail and truck transportation - distribution system - of fresh fruits and vegetables with particular emphasis on receiver requirements, carrier costs, and the shipment data model. The report consists of eleven volumes. The findings, conclusions, and recommendations are condensed in the Executive Summary. The study results are discussed more fully in the General Summary, covering (1) the estimate of the consequences of allowing current transportation trends in this industry to continue, (2) descriptions of the logistics system alternatives recommended for effecting changes in rail and truck produce transportation, (3) a description of the study approach, (4) a description of current produce-handling by producers and receivers, (5) a description of current rail and truck service, cost, and technology.
