The project proposes dredging required to maintain the 800-foot wide channel to Newport News. The channel extends westwardly approximately 4.8 miles from Norfolk Harbor Channel to Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company coal piers. Maintenance dredging will require removal of about 300,000 cubic yards of shoaled material over entire channel length. While maintaining the carrying capacity of the channel for efficient movement of commercial navigation, the action will remove or disrupt some neritic and benthic organisms and will result in a temporary increase in turbidity near the dredge area.
