A joint Federal task force was requested to examine long-range energy goals of the motor vehicle fleet, compatible with environmental, safety, and economic objectives. Eight special panels were established to address major impact areas. The reports of these panels provide the data base for the report, which describes the analysis of realizable automotive design goals, their impacts on the consumer, and the economy and the alternatives for government actions to facilitate the design goals.
