Space communications in the 1980s will experience a significant advancement in capability and performance. The increase will be the result of technology developments occuring today. A laser communications system is being developed for space test in 1980 which will provide a data transfer capability of 1000 megabits per second. The test will provide the demonstration needed to establish the reliability and survivability of high quality optics and lasers in the space environment. The main features and operation of the system are presented and the system technology reviewed. (Author)
