Boys are involved in more motor vehicle accidents than are girls. Nighttime accidents account for relatively few accidents. However, severity of accident is increased at dark. A different type of accident occurs when the bicycle is used as a toy or as a means of transportation. More motor vehicle accidents happen when the bicycle is used as a means of transportation. The relative safety of a bicycle is not determined by its style. The size of the bicycle in relation to the size of the child may be an important factor in bicycle safety. The side of street a bicyclist rides does not seem to be of major consideration with regard to frequency of accidents and accident type. (Author)
