Armed conflicts have during the last decade had a devastating effect on South Eastern Europe. The countries of the region now face huge challenges in respect of political and economic reform. A well functioning transport system is a precondition for trade and economic development. The pilot project has analyzed current problems in the transport sector and has identified research needs. Research-based knowledge is urgently required by the sector in the region to solve the massive problems ahead. Priority areas for transport research during the next few years are: Transport policy and institutional reform, transport planning and evaluation methods, passenger transport demand and supply, freight transport demand with emphasis on ports, sea transport and inland waterways and finally, road safety and environmental concerns.
