The activities of the Laboratory of Space Technology in 1996 are described. The main area in research is spaceborne and airborne remote sensing, including instrumentation, measurements, and development of geophysical inversion algorithms. New international research activities were initiated, including three projects funded by the European Commission and two new Announcement of Opportunity projects (ERSTandem and Radarsat ADRO). The new HUTRAD microwave radiometer system is accommodated onboard the Skyvan research aircraft. The aircraft was operated in several research projects. The main research applications were forest inventory, snow mapping, sea ice research, water quality, and atmospheric research.
