Tests have been conducted with a pilot model steel skid-mounted pile driver, 55-foot leads, in order to determine the ability of this set to meet military requirements. This report covers tests conducted with the pilot model on the erection, dismantling, required operating detail, balance point, shipping space, weight, and general pile driving operation. This report concludes that the steel skid-mounted pile driver set is basically well designed. It can be extended to 65-foot lead as originally requested by the addition of a 10-foot standard section of steel lead. Skid-mounted pile drivers are slow to maneuver on land and trestle under their own power. The unit would be more compact and efficient if both hoist and hammer were operated from an oil burning steam boiler.
