The design of a bicycle influences its driving characteristics in such a way that e.g. a large wheelbase makes the bicycle more stable but at the same time hard to maneuver. A variable bicycle for children was designed by the Swedish Road and Traffic Research Institute in order to study the specific effects of the alterations of one or several variables, e.g. the effect of a large wheelbase upon the stability. The aim of the study was twofold: on the one hand to test the function of the bicycle in the practical experimental situation and on the other hand to study the possible effects of the wheelbase and head angle upon stability.
