This report describes the development of the Automatic film Titling System (AFTS) from its first design approach to the final accepted prototype model. Included are the problems encountered in character generation, edge detection and xerography. The solutions to these problem areas are shown with illustrations and explanation of the final design. The reliability section of the report gives the final reliability prediction based on Mil-Hdbk-217 standards. These predictions appear to be conservative. The recommendations for future film titling systems include the changes required for an improved model based on the Contractor's operating experience and comments received during the final test phase.
