This 62-page report is one of a series prepared for the Urban Mass Transportation Administration to assess future options for the evolution of paratransit. The report focuses on a relatively recent phenomenon, public transportation in non-urbanized areas, which has been characterized as one of substantial achievement, great potential, and an uncertain future. In a concise manner, the author presents the background of paratransit in rural areas. This is followed by a retrospective summary of what has been accomplished to-date, including social service agencies, state and federally-sponsored services, and for-profit services.
