The American Red Cross Safety Belt Cooperative Education and Networking Outreach Project was funded by NHTSA to educate the public about the importance and benefits of safety belts and safety seats and their effectiveness in reducing deaths and injuries from motor vehicle crashes. Motor vehicle trauma is the fourth leading cause of death and one of the most formidable public health problems this country faces today. The project was established to expand Red Cross efforts in accident prevention and injury control in addition to addressing a major public health and safety need of the nation.
