To investigate reported cases of engine flameout occurring during flight in snow, tests were made on a ground-running helicopter, using a device for generating artificial snow. The tests showed that operation in snow could result in engine flameout, largely as a result of accumulations of ice being formed in the engine inlet plenum chamber. It is concluded that flight in any condition of snow is unsafe with the existing engine inlet configuration of this helicopter. (Author)
