The Hipparcos payload calibration activities during the commissioning period of the inorbit operations are discussed. Both geometrical and photometric calibration tasks are performed. The aim of the payload calibration during the commissioning phase include: calibration of parameters that are used in the operation of the satellite; preliminary calibration to establish the feasibility of the definitive calibration to be performed by the data reduction consortia; and verification that the payload and appropriate satellite performances are within specification. Concerning the calibration performance, the predicted accuracies and the specifications are compared, and the corresponding individual measurement times are shown.
