An evaluation was made of the feasibility of maintaining the automotive emissions control systems and engines which will be manufactured to meet various exhaust-emissions standards for oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide so that these systems and engines will meet the standards in actual use. The present condition of the service industry, progress toward enforcing proper maintenance, and the impact of political actions and social attitudes on progress are dicussed.
