The study evaluates the types of degradation which occur in the principal brake system design types manufactured during the years 1964 - 1969 for use on American-made automobiles and light trucks. Evaluation includes the determination and measurement of the effects of the various types and levels of component degradation on braking systems performance, in terms of safety-related criteria. Further, evaluation includes the assessment of existing inspection and test standards, procedures and equipment, in the light of degradation analysis data. The purpose of the study is to provide a basis for recommending improvements in existing motor vehicle inspection technology. The test program included both road and dynamic analyzer testing of disc and drum brake systems reporesenting three basic vehicle weight classes. The principal results of the study are summarized.
