The amended Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) rule was published in the Federal Register on April 9, 1990. It requires TCAS-II equipage of all civil aircraft with more than 30 passenger seats operating in the United States by December 30, 1993. The same rule also requires turbine powered aircraft with 10 to 30 seats to be equipped with TCAS-I by February 9, 1995. Described here is the technical operation of the different types of TCAS and how General Aviation participates in the TCAS environment. Development efforts of a low cost airborne collision avoidance system are also addressed.
