The research project determined the feasibility of installing miniature piling for effective and economic stabilization of failing railroad subgrades. A test section of minipiles was installed to the subgrade of a railroad spur. Minipiles of two different configurations, singlets and doublets, were installed, as were two different lengths of each configuration. Instrumentation was installed within the various sections of minipile, and in an adjoining 'control' section without minipile. Then loaded ballast cars of 130 ton gross were moved over the test section. The instrumentation showed that the minipiles provided a definite increase in support of the track superstructure as deflections over the minipile were reduced by as much as 80% of that of the control section.
