The overall objective of this project was to develop information and guidance for the transit industry concerning wheelchair lifts on transit buses in the areas of lift procurement, testing and acceptance, training, and maintenance. The methodology for the project included a nationwide survey/inventory of lifts, the buses equipped with them, and the transit systems operating them. The report concludes that the assessment of passive lifts on fixed-route transit buses disclosed a wide variation in performance of the various designs and installations at the various transit systems. The report also presents significant results of the project in the form of guidelines and recommendations for the general areas of lift design and specifications, testing and acceptance procedures, procurement requirements, safety considerations, and training and operational procedures.
