Data were collected in order to assess owner/driver and vehicle descriptive factors involved in vehicle maintenance behavior. From the national population of 47,065,425 registered owner/drivers of automobiles (i.e., non-government, non-fleet, dometic, privately owned passenger vehicles, years 1958 to 1968), a sample of 58,344 registrants was drawn and mailed questionnaires. The major variables (and their correlates) under consideration were: year, make and type of vehicle; age, sex, occupation, residence and schooling of owner/drivers; type of motor vehicle inspection system; and knowledge index. The results of the final report of the national automobile survey focused on the descriptive analysis of various motivating factors and resultant maintenance behaviors. Included with these results were the results of pilot studies of the maintenance behaviors of registered truck and motorcycle owner/drivers. For these pilot studies, a systematic sample of 2500 registrants was drawn from the respective populations. Valid questionnaire returns from the mailouts were 175 for truck owner/drivers and 254 for motorcycle owner/drivers. (Author)
