As well as the new technological problems they raise, projects of future hypersonic aircraft must retain acceptable aerodynamic characteristics within a very broad flight range, O.N.E.R.A. has undertaken an experimental wind tunnel study, including aerodynamic force measurements, on a number of simplified aircraft configurations capable of Mach 7, from the incompressible domain up to hypersonic speeds (Mach 5 and 7). This study included the influence of shapes resulting from the choice of different engine types - voluminous turbo-ramjet, or more discreet supersonic combustion ramjet - on the pitch and roll stability. Compatibility problems of internal and external flows are examined, especially those raised by highly deformable intakes and exhausts. (Author)
