TCAS 2 equipment (Traffic Alert and Collisional Avoidance System) is viewed as a supplement to the pilot who, with the aid of air traffic control system, has the primary responsibility for avoiding mid air collisions. A description of the system is given. Installation principles and experience gained on several aircraft types before obtaining approval of TCAS 2 installation are provided. The integration of this system raised a lot of problems, ranging from European airworthiness/operational approval requirements, missing top level specification, a not mature system and integration/compatibility problems.
