The technique of launching aerodynamic models at hypersonic speeds with a helium-operated, heavy-piston-type, two-stage, light-gas launcher is discussed. The theoretical design of a launcher to give constant acceleration to the model is presented. A computer study for predicting the launcher performance is conducted using a one-dimensional hydrodynamics computer code. The performance of the launcher is studied experimentally, and the optimization is investigated. (Author)
