The author has recently been a guest professor at the Institute for Guidance and Control, Technical University, Berlin, for 15 weeks as a part of the MIT-TU Berlin exchange program. During this period he had the opportunity to visit other technical universities, government laboratories, and industrial facilities throughout West Germany. The material contained in this report is intended to give the impressions obtained by the writer during the course of his visits and is not guaranteed to cover everything that is going on in the broad field of flight guidance. The report starts with general observations on aerospace organization and work in Germany, followed by a broad summary of the nature of work and individuals and institutions currently involved in flight guidance. This is then followed by more detailed information on individual work in flight guidance which, for the purposes of this report, is arbitrarily divided into four areas: (1) inertial guidance; (2) astronautical guidance; (3) air traffic control and air navigation; and (4) human engineering.
