Efficiently scheduling traffic, particularly heavy vehicles, remains a key challenge in transportation engineering. This project has focused on the development of a novel trafficsignal-control methodology to improve the safety of heavy vehicles on high-speed approaches to signalized intersections. The approach makes use of wireless communications between the heavy vehicle and the traffic-signal controller. The project builds upon the Trusted Truck infrastructure in order to have a more cost-effective deployment. The project also considered existing intelligent transportation system standards (e.g. National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP)) as a means of establishing a practical implementation path.
