A computer-based systems model for natural gas vehicle (NGV) fleets is described. The model uses the Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet program to analyze the economic characteristics of dual-fuel NGV fleets and assess the impact of R&D efforts. Operating, maintenance, capital and annualized life-cycle costs for the entire NGV system are calculated from vehicle and refueling station component cost inputs and system operating parameters. The benefits of NGV component R&D are readily evaluated from sensitivity analysis of system cost factors. A derivative model designed to broaden the focus of the basic model to evaluate fleet conversion options is also described. A diskette containing the model software is available from the Gas Research Institute, Technology Applications Department.
