The necessity for modernization and increasing Chinese sea power is influenced by Chinese desire to be seen as a global superpower on par with the United States, to counter US influence and regain preeminence within maritime Asia, reunification with Taiwan, and finally to protect their rapidly growing economy by securing critical trade and energy sea routes. Not only will China use this blue water force for power projection and protecting its maritime interests, but China will look to the Pacific as a new Great Wall to enhance the overall security of China. By utilizing this blue water naval capability the Chinese will be able to extend their defense of the Chinese mainland.
