The purpose of the current essay is to revise the story of the birth of the technological revolution that occurred after the launch of Sputnik. The newly formed National Aeronautics and Space Administration was a specific outcome of the launch of Sputnik. National prestige, and technical superiority are cited as reasons for the sudden interest in space. The formation and design of NASA as an agency is compared and contrasted to the formation and workings of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
