The automated command and guidance systems on board the Ariane launch vehicle are presented. The functions of the various automatic systems are summarized. Mathematical modeling is explained in terms of control theory. The development of these systems, in particular the guidance and piloting control loops, is reviewed. Hybrid simulation and model tests (wind tunnel; shaker; water tunnel) are considered. Results provide insight into problems of interface.
