The document, a product of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and The Boeing Company, presents the initial operational concept of an integrated Flight Management System (FMS) - Air Traffic Management (ATM) automation system. The concept envisions the next generation of FMS and ATM automation, and so is referred to as FMS-ATM Next Generation (FANG). Functional descriptions, potential benefits and the high-level functional capabilities required to implement 23 integrated services are described herein. All phases of flight and ground movement are evaluated. The FANG Operational Concept outlines a systems level approach to achieve gains in operating efficiency and overall system productivity while maintaining and enhancing flight safety and system integrity.
