Through its Pedestrian Safety Project, the city of San Jose has demonstrated that pedestrian accidents can be prevented through a program of public safety education. The development of this planned program of public safety education and the development of its educational activities and materials are documented. An analysis of pedestrian accidents in San Jose and a review of existing pedestrian safety programs and materials are presented. An evaluation of the project indicates that all the objectives of the project--reduction of pedestrian accidents, creation of a climate of public support and cooperation towards better pedestrian conduct, and provision of guidelines for other communities--have been accomplished.
