The measurements of aerodynamic forces of space shuttle and reentry vehicles in hypersonic facilities often becomes difficult and imprecise. Design criteria for a free flight testing system were derived and applied to the selection of system and system components. A magnetic model suspension device was constructed and optimized with respect to the requirements of gun tunnel operation. Furthermore a tracing system based on pulsed light beam emission from and on RF energy transmission to the free flight test model was developed. Several problems of tracing system performance were investigated and solved.
