This report describes the development of design guidelines for the selection of median widths for at-grade intersections on divided highways with partial or no control of access. It includes, as an Appendix, recommended revisions to the 1994 AASHTO Green Book, A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets. The contents of this report are therefore of immediate interest to highway and facility designers; highway-operations, capacity, and traffic-control personnel; and other concerned with safety and human performance. The report's conclusions are based on field observations of traffic operations at selected divided highway intersections; a statistical analysis of relationships between median width and intersection-accident experience using a statewide accident, geometric, and traffic volume database; and the use of existing traffic simulation models.
