Selected transport crew members flying 100 logistics missions maintained a log on work and rest on around-the-clock basis starting twelve hours prior to the mission and ending after three days of post-mission rest. Ninety missions were flown to Southeast Asia and ten to Europe. The average mission time was 6.7 days, during which the crew flew 44.5 hours. The full cycle including predeparture and post-mission crew rest was 9.1 days. Logged work on the average mission accounted for 44.5% of mission time. The remainder was spent in an 'off-duty' status. In the analyses, special attention was given to self-reports on sleep. Crewmen slep somewhat more out on a mission (7.3 hours versus 6.8). During the post mission crew rest they slept considerably more (9.9 hours on day 1; 9.2 hours on day 2; 8.9 hours on day 3). This finding on sleep is discussed in relation to fatigue and sleep disturbances. (Author)
