The objective of this study was to obtain information regarding the driving habits of Southern California motorists, including numbers of trips and starts, daily vehicle miles traveled, and average speeds. The information was collected using onboard instrumentation, commonly referred to as 'dataloggers' which were installed in vehicles that were used as 'exchange' or loaner vehicles in the Air Resources Board's (ARB's) twelveth light-duty vehicle surveillance project (LDVSP12). Persons who agreed to provide their vehicle to the ARB for emissions testing were provided with datalogger-equipped loaner vehicles for a period of about one week. A total of just under 100 exchanges were accomplished during the study. Motorists in this study made about 7 trips per day, with an average trip length of about 7.4 miles, and each trip was of about 14 minutes duration. Vehicles traveled about 40 miles per day.
