This program defined the conditions under which motor vehicle crash fires are ignited and proposed practicable countermeasures to reduce the incidence of these fires. Both ignition sources and fuel spillage were investigated. An important aspect of this program was to demonstrate, through the mechanics of crash testing, the type of fire safety protection that can be provided by present technology. The program consisted of five major tasks which are described.
