The report presents the design synthesis for a digital computer program that was developed, based on the application of rational techniques, for the design of the optimum midship structure of a transversely-framed dry cargo ship. The merit of the design method used is that all empirical knowledge on the proportioning of hull structure to withstand the forces of the seaway finds expression in three factors; namely: separation of structure into primary, secondary, and tertiary components.
