An in-depth survey of exposures to diesel exhaust was conducted at the Advance Transportation Company (SIC-4231) terminal in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The four major presumably exposed job groups were road drivers, local drivers, dock workers, and mechanics. Elemental carbon (7440440) sampling results at the terminal in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during cold weather indicated low level exposure about equal to geometric mean ambient highway and residential background concentrations: 1.3 micrograms/cubic meter (microg/cu m) in dock workers; exposures slightly above highway concentrations in local drivers, 2.4 microg/cu m, and road drivers, 2.7 microg/cu m; and exposure significantly above background highway concentrations for mechanics, 10.7 microg/cu m. The highest exposures to elemental carbon, organic carbon, nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), nitric-oxide (10102439), and respirable dust were noted among mechanics working in the shop. Area concentrations of airborne respirable particulates indicated the same relative ranking of jobs suggested by exposures to elemental carbon. Exposures to the nitrogen oxides and respirable particulates were significantly lower than the recommended limits.
