Large scale fire tests were conducted to evaluate proposed systems for protection of the well deck area on LSD 36 Class ships. The fire threat involves the crash of a helicopter on the flight deck spilling burning JP-5 fuel onto the landing craft and vehicles stored in the well deck below. Based on these tests, the optimum fire protection system would involve an Aqueous Film Forming Foam spray system in which the foam would be dispensed from alternating fan and straight stream nozzles located in a piping system mounted to the wing walls. The direction of the nozzles would be arranged such that one fan nozzle would be pointed downward at an angle of 15 deg from the vertical and a straight stream nozzle at 60 deg from the vertical to provide complete coverage. This arrangement was shown to suppress even the worst conflagration in the well deck within 60 seconds so that manual fire fighting, if required, could be conducted from the catwalk.
