Knowledge of exact terrain conditions and vehicle characteristics is a prerequisite for predicting vehicle performance across terrain. The development at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways experiment station of an analytical model for predicting the cross-country speed of ground-contact military vehicles resulted in the isolation of those terrain factors that significantly affect the locomotion of ground-contact vehicles.
