ADATS is one of five components in the Army's planned Forward Area Air Defense System, which together are expected to meet the Army's forward air defense needs. ADATS mission is to defend tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. The Army expects ADATS to significantly enhance its current air defense capability because of the system's extended ranges and its ability to operate in adverse environments. The system consists of a launcher and eight missiles that are guided by a laser beam and mounted on a modified Bradley Fighting Vehicle chassis. the system must be positioned so that it has a line of sight to enemy aircraft. A shoot-on-the-move capability was not part of the system's requirement.
