The mechanism is used within a shipboard launcher cell which may be elevated and trained in azimuth, like a deck gun. The retractable snubber system engages a missile and restrains it in fixed position within the launcher cell until the missile is to be launched. It relieves the lugs from damaging forces resulting from ship movement. The snubbers generally are in the form of a piston and cylinder combination.
