The objective of the study was to determine how travelers respond when confronted with information and advice about traffic conditions and the means for avoiding congestion. It was the authors' contention that the structure of traffic advisory messages would influence travelers' responses. The idea that led the authors to undertake this experiment was shown to be correct. The major conclusion the authors can draw from this study is that when possible and appropriate, advisory messages should contain accurate, timely, quantitative and imperative information.
