In April and May 2000, Helsinki University of Technology's (HUT) Ship Laboratory participated in the Phase III Ice Trials of the United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Healy. One of the primary responsibilities of the HUT members was to conduct laser profilometer measurements of the ice surface from its mounting position on the bow of the ship. As the ship moves a profile of the surface along the track of the ship is generated. From this data the height of ice surface features, e.g. ridges and rubble fields, and the spacing between these features can be obtained. The idea behind taking measurements onboard Healy during the trials was to correlate the ice surface profile characteristics and the performance of the ship. Ridges and rubble fields represent one of the most severe ice conditions and comprehensive models of their effects on ships are still lacking. It is hoped that through the analysis of this data a better understanding of the influence of the ridges and rubble fields will be obtained. This report details the collection and analysis of the later profilometer measurements from the trials. General information about the Healy and the Phase III ice trials are presented, followed by a description of the laser setup and measurements onboard the ship. Following that the results are presented, starting with the basic data collected.
