Because of the San Francisco Bay Area's unique geography, bridges serve as the region's lifeline, providing critical transportation links vital to the mobility and economic health not only of the nine counties surrounding the Bay, but of the entire state. Since 1998, the responsibility for the financial well-being of the seven state-owned toll bridges in the Bay Area has been delegated to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), in its role as the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA).
