This report presents data resulting from an extensive parametric study of the relative impact on the capability of the aircraft of the mid-1970's airlift fleet of alternative types and sizes of pallets and containers. The alternatives are described and the critical factors affecting their impact on the capability of the airlift fleet is discussed in detail. A parametric analysis is presented of the relationship of aircraft payload to cargo density, volume utilization and container parameters (i.e., volumetric efficiency, tare weight, number and gross weight limit). The relationship of container parameters to cargo restraint requirements is also presented. Findings are presented on (a) module size issues and comparisons, (b) collapsible versus rigid containers, (c) impact of container handling options, (d) relationship of container parameters and materials of construction, (e) effects of restraint requirements and methods for restraining containers and (f) container impact on materials handling processes and equipment.
